Drooling

Drool worthy: The Ekornes Stressless Collection

It’s been nearly a year since Snickers annihilated my beloved red couches. I’m still not over the trauma! And it’s been a year of sitting in beautiful yet uncomfortable replacement couches. Never, never buy a couch without sitting in it first. If the store will let you move in for a weekend, all the better. Never, unless your cat annihilates your  beloved couches and you need an immediate replacement and you only have credit on such short notice. Otherwise, sit. Sit long and hard and critically! Beauty be damned, people, it’s about FUNCTION. My backside cannot stress this enough. Ahem.

The upside is that I spend less time sitting on these miserable lumps. That has to be good thing considering the lecture I got from the scale yesterday. Oh. My. (Total aside, good thing I worked out before I weighed myself. We were this close to a major meltdown; because you know if I’m melting down, I’m bringing you people along)

The downside is that when I do want to sit down, I’ve already spent the day standing at an ironing board, sitting in a folding chair at my computer, and sitting in what has to be the most uncomfortable chair to sew. Teach me to keep old furniture and reuse it in ways never intended.  By the end of the day I’m ready to sit down on something comfy, warm, inviting—something not my couches. Put up my feet, sip a cup of tea, and watch a few Tivo episodes of Frasier.

Don’t get me wrong, they beat the floor. I can at least get off the couch without the use of a crane. But they are remarkably unsquishy. That is a word, for the record. Squishy applies to my logic, too–which is how I got to these drool worthy pieces by Ekornes.

See, while sitting in my unsquishy couches, watching reruns of Frasier, I’ve been drooling over the Eames chair and ottoman on the set. You know, that fantastic chair that has been relegated to the background in order to make room for Martin’s hideous lazy-boy. That chair. At least five times an episode I look over at IZ, sitting on the matching unsquishy couch, and say, “I love that chair.”

So, you can imagine the squealing involved when IZ sent me a link to these couches. Needless to say, I’m now drooling on my computer keyboard. You can pick your color of leather and wood bases not to mention a half dozen different styles!—and even the seats of the couches recline. They are “stressless”. I’m going to ignore the fact that they’ve emblazoned that tagline on the actual chairs because it’s kinda hard not to love a chair that promises to be squishy and stressless.

I could use less stress, couldn’t you?

Just The Way It Goes

I might be back later this evening with words. It’s one of those days—too much to do in the time alloted. I’m racing the fickle Sun which is always stress inducing. I’ve yet to grab a product shot I like, despite the ALL CAPS item on my to-do list! I’m learning that the Sun could not care less about my compulsive need to scratch things off that list. I’ve suggested, politely, that the Universe get with the program. It hailed.

Anyhow,  I thought you might want to see this capture. I shot a few extra frames of just the flowers after dozens of product shots. So, of course, this is the one that belies the fleeting sunlight.

What can you do?

The Fabulous Work of Elin Thomas

It’s Tax Day and I hope you all got yours done early! But whether you’re scrambling last minute or watching the rest of us scramble last minute, The Best of Etsy is promised relief from the drudgery of taxes. And besides, you’ve got a little rebate money coming your way, right? Well, I’ve found a few ways for you to spend it!!

The Best of Etsy — 15 April 2009 — The Tax Man Doesn’t Get the Last Laugh List

The weather here isn’t cooperating, but I’m ready to dress for spring. Lately, the Maxi  dress has caught my imagination and this one is superb!

I’m thinking I’ll wear that dress HERE. Ok, I can’t go, but I can buy the photograph!

I think we’ve established that I go coo coo for cocoa puffs, I mean pottery. And now, I can wear it!

All caps on the description aside, these would be perfect for sipping Ice Tea on the Porch in that dress. You see a theme here. Right? I refuse to let the tax man or the weather impede my delusions.

Athena’s Olive Tree is having a HUGE Sale. And I’m all over anything BEACH.

Brand new store! Such a cool concept! Go check out All Things White.

And finally, some seriously cool wall art. Still undiscovered, so you can say you saw it here first!

So that wraps up this week’s list. Come join me on Twitter today as I RT (retweet) specials and deals for Tax Day. It’s not too early to be thinking about Mother’s Day and Graduations, not to mention Wedding Season. So, find a deal and snatch it up!

About Those Donuts

I don’t know how your weather shaped up this weekend, but ours was dismal. Sheets of perpetual rain interrupted only by hail storms, winds whipping spring bulbs to tatters, and colder than you might expect in April.  In other words, the weather was being Oregon.

It was so wet, my Saturday alarm clock of over-eager gardeners with lawn mowers fell silent. The die-hards were sleeping in. Not even Yard Guilt could be talked into getting dressed this weekend. Instead of creeping at the edges, tugging at my shirtsleeves, nagging at my soul,  she threw the covers over her head in blissful knowledge that the grass could wait.

We, here at Chez Wonder, didn’t mind. In part because we had no plans to leave our house, much less get dressed this weekend.  But also because we had donuts planned. And in the cosmic battle between the dismal grey skies that so define springtime in Oregon and the small glimmer of hope for summer we nurture in our souls—Donuts, my friends, donuts always come to the rescue.

About these Donuts.

They’re baked not fried and you can find the recipe here. Be forewarned, the recipe makes a lot, a LOT of donuts. (Using a 1.5″ cookie cutter, about 100 donut holes) Too many for our tiny family to consume in one sitting. Sadly, they do not transition into day old donuts, slightly dry but still edible. No, they become rocks; because they’re baked, not fried. It’s trade-off, I suppose. One worth making when you start factoring calories. Which, might not be something you should do when you’re talking donuts.

Anyhow, unless your family is quite large or you’re feeding teenagers, I don’t suggest you  make the whole recipe at one time. Instead, you can do this:

After the first rise, split the dough in half. Roll out the first half, let rise, bake, devour. Set the second half aside in the refrigerator, covered in plastic wrap. Before bed, roll out the second half and put on a baking sheet. Cover that sheet in plastic wrap and pop back into the fridge. You’ll need to take them out an hour before baking the next morning–but if you let them rest and rise, you can have a second batch of fresh donuts the next morning.

And I know we’re not talking calories, but just the same—I sugar these donuts in small batches. I only melt a couple of tablespoons at a time and you won’t need as much butter as the recipe calls for. If you sugar them in small lots, then you’ll need fresh sugar/cinnamon about half way through the process.  The sugar mix gets too wet to stick otherwise. But in small batches you’ll have less waste. If that makes sense?

The chocolate glaze is super easy.  Just mix melted dark chocolate chips, a bit of milk, and powdered sugar until it’s the right consistency.

Until We Meet Again

It’s Good Friday and time for me to step away from the computer and be with my family.  May the blessings inherent in the rituals you choose to honor restore you. We step into the darkness of Friday and emerge with new beginnings, fresh perspective, and renewed selves. Sunday is, after all, just around the corner.

I’ll be back on Monday with images and words and maybe, some news. May each of you know the Peace that surpasses all understanding. I do wish you all a beautiful holiday weekend.

The Ocean Won

The Ocean waves “Hello!”

The sun reappeared today, after a very soggy start. When that happens, the inhabitants of Chez Wonder are thrown into the inevitable dilemma. Do we take advantage of the fleeting sunlight and get a little more yard work done? (the neighbors are mumbling, again!) Or do we play hooky from weed patrol and head for the beach?

Yeah, it was pretty much a no-brainer.

The Best of Etsy — 8 April 2009

Amazing work from Midnight Blue Adorn

Can you believe it’s already April? We’ve been blessed with a few sunny days this month and April is already feeling lighter than March. I hope it’s finding all of you well!

Today’s list is eclectic. But I think there are a few treasures worth perusing. Think of it like an Easter Egg Hunt: what will you find when you click? Enjoy!

The Best of Etsy — 8 April 2009.  The Treasure Hunt List

My newest favorite thing to hunt for on Etsy is colored glass. WOW!

I’m really fascinated by things that incorporate “words”. So, this is a must! And who isn’t a fan of recycling?

Speaking of words. . . Our life is what our thoughts make it!

Word scrambles + Love notes = Snail mail bliss. It’s the best kind of treasure hunt, finding real mail mixed in with the bills!

Feeling a little stressed out? You can stop searching: Stress relief for the Modern Worker!

I’m always searching the next “it” bag–the perfect carryall. This one is a contender!

And finally, while I’m a huge fan of tiny ceramic mushrooms for your terrarium, I’m liking this vintage piece! Everyone needs a gremlin, right?

Have fun looking through this list. I’d love to hear what you think— so feel free to leave a comment. And as always, you can find The Best of Etsy each Wednesday afternoon at 1 pm PST on Twitter! Join me!
