It is good to remember… I think we forget the idea that in some cases remembrance should be sacred. Thank you for the reminder.

These holidays were always hard for me, as I don’t like to do these kinds of sermons. It always seemed like the “let’s glorify war” day. But, remembrance is a different thing, and I do think we’re called to remember. ~W
I have been thinking about this holiday the past few days- I’ve heard painfully little about it as the time when we remember. I saw one flag when we took a long walk of several miles about Chicago neighborhoods this morning. And yet, my father, father-in-law, and three brother-in-laws all deserved to be remembered for their service. I had already started a note to Rich’s brother, recently returned from three tours in Iraq and a 35 year career- now I’m off to finish it.
You are a good neighbor to come and visit every day whether I’m being hospitable or not. I like that in a friend. Thanks.

It’s weird around here… the flags are out in force today, but just today. I didn’t see much this weekend. ~W
‘Tis a sacred day, indeed, in spite of the nonchalance that seemingly prevails. I know of some bold peonies that would make a beautiful remembrance decoration on a soldier’s grave tomorrow.

They would, indeed! (except, I’d have to steal them. And while pinching lilacs seems a lesser crime, pinching peonies would never do!) ~W
My mom always leaves flowers at my brothers’ graves too; they weren’t Veterans, but I don’t think that this holiday is just about that, is it?

Traditionally, it is a day we remember those fallen in battle. But, I think it’s evolved some. I certainly don’t think it hurts for it to evolve into a day we honor those who came before us! ~W
I was just going through some old photos of family life, seeing myself as a younger person, seeing my loved ones who have passed on, and remembering the things we talked about, the dreams I had… Looking back can help you move forward with renewed focus on the path ahead.
What beautiful replies everyone has left…I usually dismiss this “holiday” as a remeberance of war, but I love the idea of changing my story and remembering whomever I want. Thank you

Oh, I hear you. I try to keep in mind, that those who went and served and died are still people to be remembered. Even if I don’t agree with the war, or the reasons for the war–they had lives worth recognizing because we all have lives worth recognizing. And, honestly, remembering the dead, whether they served in the war, seems appropriate on a day like today. Especially since we don’t seem to do that at any other time as a corporate whole. ~W
This is the first time we’ll go to a memorial service and I’m looking forward to it. We remembered at church yesterday and we were all crying, but it was a cleansing cry. We have our freedom because there were and are people who make that ultimate sacrifice. Thank God for them! 🙂

Heh, church always feels a wee bit odd on these days. I appreciate the idea of honoring the dead without glorifying war. That’s a fine line to walk and sadly, most churches don’t succeed. It sounds like you guys had a great service! ~W
I love what you’ve said about honoring those who have served (and are serving) without supporting war itself. It *is* hard to do, but so necessary. I’m just repeating what you said, but it’s so true for me. I may disagree with what’s going on, may think the war that they are serving is misguided, wrong, or worse, but people serve for all kinds of reasons that we can’t always know, and they and their families have my respect and support. ~A
