The air here is riddled with flying creatures in full mating stance. These little buggers are attached and “going at it!” in flight. Joy. So many, it’s hard to go the day without accidentally smooshing one by sitting. Little bits of erotic death mashed into your clothing. It’s a sight to behold. Disney Cast Members (yes, that is capitalized, tyvm!) call them “Love-Bugs”–clever, no? Anyhow, here we are–and here they are. Of course, leave it to Boy Wonder to make this connection:
Boy Wonder: Mom, I think they are attracted to bright colors–like your legs.
Love Bugs are a pain. One driving trip through the south was during their mating season and we had to stop every ten miles or so and scrape them off the windshield so we could see well enough to make the next ten. We didn’t know what they were called and asked a gas station attendent we ever after referred to as Bubba — a big old white boy was about 6’4″ tall and 280 pounds – straight from Deliverance. The conversation:
“What are these bugs called,” I asked.
Bubba: “Oh. Dems Buuuugs.”
I have never heard of such a thing. Yet another reason to stay away from Florida. (although we are going to Tampa for a gymnastics meet in March!) Hope you’re having fun, legs and all!
might i recomend going to seaworld and seeing love-whales?
